First ever Beaver Camp

This weekend our beavers made history by becoming the first beavers in our Scout Group to go camping. 11 beavers along with 4 scouters took part in Camp Rock, the National Beaver Camp held in Pallaskenry. The event was attended by 400 beavers coming from all over the country.

The leaders came out friday night to put up the tents and returned again early on saturday morning. At 10am the 11 eager campers arrived and got settled into their tents. The event started with the opening ceremony followed by the bases which included cooking pop corn on a stove, baking scones in a cardboard box, lighting fires by flint, a fire safety demo by the Fire Service, human Xs and Os, gardening in a tub, human fuseball and some other games.

After dinner we had the evening events which included a bouncing castle, a magician, giant jenga and a demonstration from Limerick Animal Welfare. That was followed by the campfire before heading back to the campsite for toasted marshmallows before bed. Next morning the beavers (who were up well before 6am) helped take down the tent. Paddy the magician had made a balloon sword for all the beavers. After the Scouts’ Own, we packed up the gear and held a log chew (a small review with the beavers) before handing out the badges. At midday the parents came for the now very tired beavers.

The beavers really enjoyed themselves this weekend and can’t wait for their next trip. Special thanks to Mike O’Halloran, Frank McDonagh, Steven O’Sullivan and Foirse Cavanagh.

10 lads from the Cub Pack did themselves, the Cub Pack and the Group proud with the behaviour during the Guard of Honour the performed at the funeral of the late Mickey Long. The boys met the Funeral outside Mickeys house before walking beside the hearse to Caherdavin Church. At the church they helped to bring the wreaths into the church.Mickey would have been proud of them.

Well done to the following boys Brendan Burke,Cillian Hickey,Cian Guilfoyle,Senan Cavanagh,Gareth O Brien,Dean Carey,Dean McGinn,Aidan Keane,John Conway and Joey Hempenstall and to leaders Michael O Halloran and Ger Cavanagh

Mickey was a leader in the Caherdavin Group in the early days in the 70’s and 80’s.Mickey was a great leader and there was nothing he wouldn’t do to help out his cubs or scouts.Mickeys car could be seen carrying any number of young lads in it to and from scouting events.A more detailed piece about Mickeys Scouting years will appear here soon.

To his family we extend our sincere sympathy and you can be assured that Mickey will be forever remembered in the Caherdavin Group.

May he rest in peace
