The scout section caters for boys aged 12 to 15. We currently have 12 scouts split up into 2 patrols. Each patrol is a team of 6-8 scouts, lead by a Patrol Leader (PL) and an Assistant Patrol Leader (APL) who are older scouts. All Scout activities are done in Patrols. The aim of the patrol system is to develop teamwork and to encourage older scouts to pass on their knowledge and experience to younger scouts.
The troop meets once a week. The troop programme is planned by the Patrol Leaders Council with the support of the Scouters. In addition to troop meetings, we aim to have one outdoor activity a month. These include hiking, camping, bivvying and participating in county events (Orienteering Day, Challenge Day, County Shield). The highlight of the Scouting year is the Annual Camp which takes place in the Summer. In 2011, we went to Portlick in Westmeath.
The Scout Programme is called the Spirit of Adventure and is based around Irish Explorer Tom Crean. There are 4 stage awards (Discovery, Terra Nova, Endurance and Polar) as well as the Adventure Skills, Special Interest Badges and the Chief Scout’s Award (linked with the Bronze Gaisce Award).
There are currently 5 Scouters:
- Mark Hempenstall
- Neil Ryan
- Barry Kennedy
- Aaron Lally
- David Collins
