County Cub Challenge Day

Congratulations to Robin Ryan Blake,Joey Hempenstall,Niall Barrett,Dean Carey,Sean Long and Cillian Hickey who came 2nd in this year’s County Cub Challenge Day in Meelick. The team now progress to the National Challenge day in Maynooth next month

Jamoige
We unfortunately will not be attending JamOige this year due to insufficient numbers. We will be contacting those who have paid soon with a view to returning your deposit. As an alternative we will be joining the Cubs for a night at the Shrahan Scout Centre, in Roscrea on May 26th/27th (More details to come)

Orienteering Day
Our next event is the County Orienteering Day which will take place in Curraghchase Forest Park on February 12th. This event will cost €3 per Beaver.
Registration Fee
The registration fee for this term (€80) will be collected over the next two weeks. Please bring money up in an envelope with your child’s name on it. If you have any queries, please contact the leaders.

Investiture
Our Investiture Ceremony on Monday 6th February in the Scout Hall. This is where we formally welcome our new beavers into the Scout Movement, a worldwide family of over 30 million people. Family members are welcome on this night.
This is a uniformed event. If anyone still needs to buy the Beaver Jumper it can be bought on www.thescoutshop.ie

Bag Packing
We have been given a slot for bag packing in Dunnes Stores, Jetland Centre on the following dates

March 2nd 6pm-10pm
March 3rd 10am -6pm

We will be looking for volunteers from the parents to help with this event. If you can give two of your time on either of these dates please contact Barry.

Dear parents

Due to the following reasons we have decided not to take part in Jamoige in June

Insufficient no.of Leaders
Only 12 boys interested in going
If we had decided to take part in JamOige we would not be able to have any other sleepovers or outings due to the high costs involved with JamOige

The following are the Sleepovers we are doing between now and the end of May

Sleepover in the Scout hall 4th February
Sleepover in Curraghchase Scout House Sat/Sun 14th/15th April Cost €25
Cup Camp Srahan Scout Centre Roscrea Friday to Sunday May 25th to 27th Cost €60

Anybody who has paid a deposit for JamOige can either have the money back or if they so wish they can put it towards any of the above events.

Please let us know which events you wish your son to attend

A deposit of €5 for Curraghase sleepover is required

A deposit of €10 will be needed for Cub camp

Please contact any of the leaders about any of these events if need be

Regional Cub Challenge Day 2012

We had 2 teams that took part in the regional Cub Challenge at Meelick Scout Hall on Sunday 22nd January 2012.The event consisted of 5 challenges in the morning and a table quiz in the afternoon.Some of the activities included Fire lighting,Water challenge,Air Activities,Team challenge and building with bamboo and elastic bands.Both of the teams perform very well and when it came to announcing the prize winners we were delighted when one of our teams came second thus qualifying for the National Cub challenge which takes place in Maynooth the end of February.

Team 1 which finished 3rd had the following boys in it: Cillian Hickey,Sean Long,Dean Carey,Robin Ryan Blake,Niall Barrett and Joey hempenstall

Team 2 had the following boys in it : Senan Cavanagh,Cian Guilfoyle,Liam Kelly,Callum Dunworth,Brendan Burke,Max Doherty and Andrew Quigley

Well done to the 2 leaders who looked after the boys Michael O Halloran and Mary Geary

Xmas Message

The Group would like to wish all involved in the 23rd Limerick Scout Group a very Happy and Safe Xmas & New Year.A big thank you to all the Leaders for all the time they have given in the last 12 months.Thank You to all the parents and to anyone else who has helped us out in any way during the past 12 months.

It has been a great year for everyone involved with some of the highlights being for Beavers The National Beaver Camp,For Cubs The Cub Camp in Dundrum,For scouts the High/Low challenge and for Venturers also the High/Low Challange.It was a year when we finally start the new one programme.This is a challenging programme for all our members.It was a year when the Group lost one of its very first Leaders Micky Long RIP.

Finally lets hope that the Group can continue to go from strength to strength in the new Year and we wish everyone a very successful year.This is a year when 3 of our Scouts will bring great honour to our group when the take part in February in the Crean challenge which takes place in Iceland.Its a year when both our Beavers and Cubs hope to go to Jamoige in Dublin in June and our Rovers hope to go to Riverway in Finland in July

Once again Have a Very Happy Xmas and Very Happy New Year

Dear Parents

We would like to thank you for all your support over the past few months. We’ve been busy introducing the Beavers to the ONE Programme and we’ve a lot more exciting activities planned for the next couple of months.

Jam Oige

At our last parents meeting we discussed the possibility of attending Jam Oige, the Jamboree for Beavers and Cubs on June 3^rd/4^thin Ardgillan Castle, Dublin. The event is estimated to cost €60-€80 but we are currently looking at ways to lower this cost.

A €10 deposit is required next Monday in order for us so we know how many beavers will attend this event. Please include this in an envelope with your son’s name on it.

Christmas Party

Next week we will be holding our Christmas Party for all our Beavers. For this we would like all beavers to bring up their letter to Santa on the night. This will be our last meeting until January 9^th.

Discovery Weekend (Scouts)

This weekend the Scouts headed off to Dundrum Scout Centre in Tippery for the “Discovery Weekend”. Friday night was spent playing wide games in the forest. Saturday morning saw the patrols collect fire wood while Conor and Eoin cooked breakfast. This was followed by a session on camping skills. After lunch, the Scouts worked on their pioneering- building towers for a game of man hunt later that evening.

We then had a campfire and scouts own. Barry invested Daniel into the Troop and then presented the Discovery Award badges, the first stage of the Crean Awards (the new scout award scheme) and Patrol Leader and Assistant Patrol Leader Badges. After the campfire the group split in two. The Ventures lead the younger scouts on a hike along the forest track while Barry went with the 3 older scouts on a cross country night navigation excercise through the forest as training for the Crean Challenge.

The next morning everyone got up and clean the house before getting to try out the impressive zip line on the site.

Thanks to all the Scouts for their work this weekend and thanks to the ventures (Andy and Ashley) and leaders (Baz, Mike and Neil) for running the weekend. Thanks also to Charlie Sullivan, the warden of the site. Photos available here.

Discovery Weekend (Scouts)

Programme
Over the weekend we’ll be covering the final parts of the Discovery Award as well as elements of the Pioneering and Camping Adventure Skills badges. On Sunday we will be having the investiture of the new scouts into the troop.

Transport
Scouts to arrange their own transport to and from the event. We’re asking all Scouts to be at the centre for 8pm on Friday. Collection is at 2pm on Sunday. Directions can be found here

Broadford Cub Sleepover

Our cubs enjoyed a great weekend at Broadford Guide Center this weekend.On Friday we had 9 cubs out there as we only took the sixers and assistants out to Broadford .the reason for this is that these boys were being trained in their sixes and assistant sixer duties.

On Saturday the rest of the Cub Pack arrived.We now had 18 cubs.The boys took part in tent pitching,Biiving and compass work on Saturday afternoon. A big thanks to the 3 Venturers Glen,Frank and Andy who looked after these bases.

Saturday evening we took the boys to Doon lake.This was followed by dinner and we finished the night by going on a night hike.

On Sunday after cleaning up the cottage the boys left for home after a busy but most enjoyable weekend.
