Cubs & Scouts Weekend Sleepover

The Older cubs who are due to go up to Scouts in September joined the Scouts and Venturers for a nights camping in the Field in Cfratloe. The cubs were very much looking forward to this event and meet with the scouts at the Grotto in Cratloe on Saturday to hike to the Field. The first activity for the cubs was absailing in the woods and for most of the cubs it was a first time absailing. It was then onto the camping field where sleeping arrangements were set up for the night.Again a first for the cubs was when they were allowed to bivy for the night. The also took part in Backwoods cooking.

A special word must go to the Scouts and Venturers and the Leaders who helped the boys all weekend and made them feel as if they were part them and not just cubs still. The boys learned so much this weekend from the Scout Leaders and Scouts.

Hopefully this is the first of many events in which the scouts and cubs go away together as it really makes it an easier transition from cubs into scouts when the time comes to move up.

Thanks to the scout Leaders for making this such an enjoyable event for the cubs

Cubs Chief Scout Awards 20km Walk

On Tuesday April 6th our 6 cubs who are doing the Chief Scout Award took part in what is probably the hardest part of the Award when they did their 20km walk. The Venue for this event was the Bernard Loop near Anglesboro Co Limerick. All the boys arrived the night before as we wanted to start out early the next day.We stayed in Anglesboro Community Hall. All the boys were briefed on the following days hike

And so onto the hike.It began at 10am and the first section of this hike was very demanding for these young lads as for 1.5 km it was straight uphill before we got to the trail itself. The Bernard trail for the main is a gradually climb uphill for 10km which is very do able for cubs before it flattens out for a bit before the long and difficult decent which is almost straight down to the end of the trail. The trail is through the forest trails that are on the mountain and some of the scenery on this walk is stunning. Our boys made light work of it and they completed it in 5 hours. The weather was very good for most ofvthe hike apart from one incredable hail shower which turned every place white.

All the boys had their tutn leading the hike and were properly kitted out fro all elements.

A big thank you to fellow Leader Ger Quigley and especially to Andy and Ashley for their great help throughtout this event. Also to Mary who had all the meals prepared for us so we only had to reheat them.

Thanks to all the parents for their great help getting the boys to and from the event

And finally a hugh congratulations to Cillian,Senan,Dean,Sean, Brendan and John on completing this challenging part of you CSA Award

National Cub Challange Final Day

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Our Cubs attended the above event today and did themselves proud when finishing 10th  overall in Ireland. It was an early start for the boys as we met at the Scout Hall at 6-45am for the trip to Maynooth. After a short stop at Midway for breakfast we finally arrived in Maynooth at 10am.Before the competition began there were various games for the boys.

At 11am the first part of the competition began This was a quiz and our boys scores 41 points out of 80 here leaving them in 23 position. It must be said that the questions asked were really to hard for this age group. The top score being 53.

After lunch the boys had the second part of the day which were a series of team challanges. This included Pioneering,Firelighting,Making paper aeroplanes and making shapes following instuctions. The boys were outstanding in the pioneering scoring 25 out of 25 and 22 out of 25 in making shapes. These scores added to the quiz score saw us jump up to 10th place. The boys did themselves and the cub pack proud.

On the way home we stoped in to Supermacs before arriving back at the Scout Hall at 7-30pm

A big thanks to Mike and Mary who looked after the boys today.

Our team was Cillain Hickey,John Conway,Sean Long,Dean Carey,Niall Barrett and Robin Ryan Blake. Also a mention to Joey Hempenstal who unfortunatly had to pull out due to illness.Joey was part of this team until then and was one of the reasons why we got this far
